Tips for Easy Quilting
with Denim
Make great use of old denims by turning them into quilts.
While denim is a heavy material, there are several ways to make
it is easy quilting with denim. However, it is
important to note that denim quilts may not be the best project
for beginners. If you compare it with working with lighter
fabrics such as cotton, it is of course not that easy quilting
with denim.
Again, if you are looking for a light quilted cover then
denim is not the material to use but if you are intent on using
it, here are some useful suggestions for easy quilting with
denim.
Worn jeans are your best sources of denim. However, if the
old jeans in your closet are still wearable then you may want
to consider donating them and instead use denim scraps or those
that are of no other use.
For easy quilting with denim, go with block patterns. You
can mix fabrics but be sure they are about the same weight. To
start, cut out all the unusable parts of the denim and then cut
square blocks in just one size, for instance, 6-inch squares.
Alternatively, if you would like rectangular blocks, cut all
the fabric pieces with the same width but different length, for
instance, 6 inches x 8 inches.
To make some variations, you can add a few pieces of old
corduroy cutting it to the same size as your denim blocks. You
can also use another denim fabric or some other heavy fabric of
a different color aside from the basic blue to make a checkered
quilt. Make a crazy quilt by using other colored denims. If you
want to be more creative, add some appliqué or embroidered
pieces to your design.
When you have all your fabric pieces ready, you can start
with sewing. Remember to use a special needle for sewing denim
seams. Additionally, make bigger seam allowances because washed
denim tends to fray a lot.
You can leave out the stuffing or the batting since the
denim is already heavy. Instead of a batting, the backing
fabric can be fleece or heavy flannel instead. If you do want
fillers, you can use regular cotton but it will add to the
quilt’s weight and bulk.
Once you have tried out a few pieces, you will find that it
easy quilting with denim. Additionally, there are so many uses
for quilted denims besides bedcovers or picnic cloths so you

pillow and cushion covers or matching placemats and potholders
for a country look to your kitchen.
